Success at Shaftesbury Car link

27th November 2018

We are Martin and June Hull and were due to take over the running of the above scheme on the 1st November. However, due to Debbie Simmons having to pass over the reins sooner than expected, we were thrown in at the deep end! We are starting to get to grips with it now, but it has been a steep learning curve!

Since we have taken over responsibility for running the scheme we have been very busy designing posters and flyers, business cards and even getting creative with  fridge magnets. We have driven through almost every country lane and village in the SP7 area putting up flyers and visited some wonderful village stores that have all been so welcoming.

We have also been busy fundraising as we have needed new computer equipment and printer (ours were out of the arc and not very reliable) and some much needed stationery and office equipment.  Our grateful thanks go to Shaftesbury Charitable Trust, Williams and Williams, The Lions and Shaftesbury Town Council’s Transport Group who have all supported us so far. We are waiting to hear from Tesco as to whether we have been successful in being a named cause for their ‘bags of help’ scheme. Our next ‘plan’ is to source funding for a wheelchair accessible vehicle so that we can help even more people – watch this space!

We are also extremely proud to have been invited to become affiliated with Shaftesbury Royal British Legion. All the paperwork has been completed and we should shortly be receiving our official certificate of affiliation. We are told that we are the first adult scheme in the UK to become officially affiliated – thank you to the Chairman and committee of Shaftesbury Legion for this honour. We will not let you down!

Since taking over the scheme we have taken on 3 new volunteer drivers – but we desperately need more. On average we are now carrying out 4 trips per day, but sometimes as many as 8, to various locations, mainly medical trips to hospitals, dentists and local surgeries etc but have extended the scheme to include more localised trips and are now helping people with their shopping, taking them to visit friends and the very valuable hairdressing appointments!  It is so nice to feel able to help people and to see the look on their faces when they get to meet old friends is worth more than gold.

One of the best things of all is the support from our volunteer drivers without whom we would not be able to run the scheme – so thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are all awesome!!!!!
